Thanet is a great place to live and work...
Our historic seaside towns of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs and surrounding villages are rich in heritage and opportunity. With 19 miles of stunning coastline, our beautiful Blue Flag beaches, the internationally renowned Turner Contemporary, and the UK’s only Royal Harbour are all just a short train ride from central London thanks to the high-speed rail link. Our proximity to the Port of Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone mean Europe is literally on our doorstep too.
All of this, combined with a flexible approach to how we work makes it an exciting time to join Thanet District Council. We have set our sights high. We want our residents to enjoy the highest quality services. We want to ensure that by listening to local people, working in active partnership and doing things in an innovative way, we can accelerate improvement to meet the challenges ahead.
Thanet District Council has an exciting opportunity for a Harbour Master to lead and manage the Port of Ramsgate consisting of a modern commercial port alongside the historic Ramsgate Royal Harbour. In combination these sites cover an area of 65 hectares serving both leisure and commercial customers.
The 600 berth Royal Harbour Marina is set within an 18th century grade 2 listed harbour. The marina serves permanent berth holders and visiting vessels. The harbour is also home to commercial customers including a fishing fleet, pilot cutter services and a multitude of commercial maritime vessels. The adjacent port hosts the operation and maintenance bases for two wind farm companies alongside aggregates and other businesses. A significant infrastructure improvement project is also underway to allow the port to realise its potential to host cross channel freight services to the EU.
The Harbour Master is responsible for the efficient and effective administration, operation and control of the Port of Ramsgate in accordance with statutory requirements, Council policies and necessary commercial considerations. The postholder will also lead a dedicated multidisciplinary port team.
The successful candidate will hold a Class 1 or Class 2 Deck Officer Certificate and will have detailed knowledge of working within a port environment including a sound understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code. The postholder will also be required to lead the pilotage service at the port and perform a duty pilot role1.
We are seeking a maritime professional who is looking for a new challenge and has the experience and drive to operate and develop the Port to realise its full potential. If this sounds like you then we want to hear from you.
